Immerse the material in the solution face up, gently agitate until colouration begins, allow to settle. Stop the etch when material surface is red-violet. Etch time will vary with the material. This solution colours matrix phases.

This solution reveals the general structure of pure Copper and Copper alloys, and darkens the beta phase in alpha-beta brass in Copper alloys.
This solution also colors ferrite grains in pure Iron, Iron + Carbon and Iron +(<1%)Carbon +(<4 %) additions and reveals the general structure of Iron +(4–12%) Chromium alloys.
It also colours ferrite in lower alloy grade Tool Steels.
