This product is a good general purpose etchant for Carbon & Low Alloy Steel welds; it reveals ferrite boundaries & differentiates ferrite from martensite.

This products is specified in ISO16060: Destructive tests on welds in metallic materials — Etchants for macroscopic and microscopic examination.

Description

This solution can be used at a number of different strengths dependent upon the degree of sample grinding & polishing.

  • For polished samples (3 μm diamond or finer), micro-etch with 2% Nital
  • For a ground sample (600 grit or finer), macro-etch with 5% Nital
  • Use 10 to 15% Nital for macro etching on ground surfaces.

Please Note: Etching rate is increased, sensitivity decreased with increased Nital concentration. So please choose the Nital concentration appropriate to your needs.

Swab for between 5 and 60 seconds -check result by eye.
